The Conjuring

Luxury British eyewear designer, Tom Davies, was invited to work on the latest instalment of the hit US horror film series, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which follows real-life investigations into paranormal activity. Using archive footage of the original interviews with the Smurl family, Tom created bespoke frames for all the main characters based on the original frames worn back in the 1970s and 1980s.

"The Conjuring is my favourite horror series and honestly the scariest because it is based on true stories. I've been a fan of The Conjuring for over 10 years. When I was asked to work on this movie, I was ecstatic, and honestly, this is some of my best work. I used reference material from the Smurl family, using real photos taken by the paranormal investigators. I also found an archived video from interviews given during extensive press exposure to the real-life story. The director told me that at the end of the film, he would create side-by-side images of the family alongside the actors and wanted the frames to be as authentic as possible. I utilised the power of bespoke fittings to alter the lines of the frames, which made the real-life actors look more like the people they were portraying, while still being authentic to the period." Jack

These distinctively bold navigator frames are classic 70s vintage. Based on the original frame worn by Jack Smurl himself, Tom designed these made-to-measure frames for the latest instalment of The Conjuring by studying original reference photos and video interviews.

Janet

This oversized female optical frame is based on the actual frame worn by Janet Smurl herself. An 80s-inspired frame that's a sign of the times with its angular edges and clear acetate. Tom used reference images from the original Smurl interviews to create an authentic silhouette, while customising the lens height, temple and bridge to balance the frame for the actor's face in the film.

Father Gordon

Father Gordon's browline glasses are part of the character. Four films in, and they've become as recognisable as the collar he wears. For the latest Conjuring movie, Tom used reference images to replicate the frame he's worn throughout the series, customising it to match the actor's face today.
